“But if you love God—if you live to spread a passion for his supremacy in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ—you will trust him and seek his help and pursue with your life what cost Jesus his.”—John Piper (via prevailzine)
Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
~(Psalm 50:14-15 ESV)
But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”
~(Luke 14:13-14 ESV)
Well, yesterday my tires slipped on the road while coming home from work more than the rest of the winter combined. I do not like wet slushy snow. I will take dry snow any day of the week.
Woke up to about 3 more inches on top of what was already down, but at least it is dry snow now. But, is their a nice sheet of ice under it from yesterday and have the snowplows been out yet. Got to got to work in an hour and that is a 20 mile drive to Rapid City on this mess!
A few weeks ago, several blogs criticized Mars Hill Church for having a draconian approach to church discipline. But the argument relies on the fallacy of composition.
I beg to differ. The article says that all the actions took place before the cases were on the blogosphere, but then why put out an article defending themselves after all these actions were taken. Why not instead have just stated that you had already taken action and it was resolved. Instead they let it brew for another week or so, told other sources that there was more to the story than was being told. Why not just let all out from the get go, this made it seem that they wanted hidden so that it wouldn’t show badly on them. This whole situation seems like a CYA event and not a dealing in love event.
I think a of o his teaching is good and profitable andI used to give Driscoll the benefit of the doubt a lot, but lately not so much. I mean even still I want to think that they kept it hidden so as not to give the Church (as a whole) a bad name in front of the world, but by hiding it longer they have done worse. Plus, part of me thinks that Driscoll is mainly interested in keeping his name in the news. He can’t seem to go a week without doing something that causes controversy. I think he needs to do some serious reform to himself and his organization before it all comes crashing down and is just another church scandal.
For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
Reflections on a Record Player and General Staleness of Culture
I grew up in an age when vinyl was fading. My formative years saw the rise of cassettes and then CD’s during the 80’s. I grew up with a Walkman for both formats.
Of course, cassettes died out, which they should have, due to their short lifespan. And now with the rise of digital music, CD’s appear on the verge of extinction. Most of my music library exists on my Macbook Pro, my iPod, and of course clouds for both iTunes and Amazon.
But, I have always had a very nostalgic nature, even for things I did not grow up with. So, a few months back I bought a record player. Since then, I have fallen in love with it! I go to antique shops and thrift shops on a weekly basis and dig through their vinyl collections and harvest gems that no longer seem to make an impact on society. Which is strange, having grown up on a steady diet of rock ‘n roll from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, it seems that somewhere in the 00’s (is that right? Never could figure what to call them!) rock n’ roll and I parted ways.
It just seems to me that it is all just getting stale and old and reprocessed. Most music genre’s haven’t seemed to change from the early 90’s on. Styles haven’t seemed to change much. Movies are all remakes. I mean Spiderman can’t even be out for 10 years without a reboot! What was rebellious when I was young still seems to be in vogue, which is weirding me out!
I think that my mind doesn’t want to hear just old rehashed things and I would rather go back to the source. Hence, the record player. I go and find things that were new and original and discover the joy of them all over again.
“The knowledge of Christ is profound and large; all other sciences are but shadows; this is a boundless, bottomless ocean. Though something of Christ be unfolded in one age, and something in another, yet eternity itself cannot fully unfold him. There be many excellent things in Christ, that the most eagle-eyed believer has not yet seen.”—John Flavel
“When you read the Book of Revelation as it was written it is wildly encouraging…the only people who really get away with anything are Christians. Everybody else pays in full…Someone already took care of our check.”—Michael Newnham
“Book collecting is an obsession, an occupation, a disease, an addiction, a fascination, an absurdity, a fate. It is not a hobby. Those who do it must do it.”—Jeanette Winterson (via tacit-delinquency)
Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
You may wonder what you have done to deserve God’s love. How is it that God has shown you such kindness?
This is the very stuff of grace, that He amazes you, contradicts every expectation, seeks you out, finds you and lavishes His love upon you. You have done nothing and can do nothing to earn His grace.
The secret of His grace to you lies deep in the mystery of His foreknowledge. Simply receive it, celebrate it, delight yourself in it and live as one whom God is pleased to favour from His overflowing resources of kindness.
“ The gospel shows that there is nothing you can do that impresses God…all those things are null and void…You are not loved by God because you are valuable, you are valuable because you are loved by God.”—Britt Merrick, Being Right with God (via sparrowletters)
“The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. He bought them and He will have them! They were given Him of old in the decree, and He will have them, snatching them from between the lion’s jaws by the power of His own Irresistible Grace.”—Charles Spurgeon
"And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder. One of the four beasts saying, ‘Come and see.’ and I saw, and behold a white horse"
There’s a man goin’ ‘round takin’ names, And he decides who to free and who to blame. Everybody won’t be treated all the same, There’ll be a golden ladder reachin’ down. When the man comes around.
The hairs on your arm will stand up, At the terror in each sip and in each sup. Will you partake of that last offered cup, Or disappear into the potter’s ground? When the man comes around.
Hear the trumpets hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singin’. Multitudes are marchin’ to the big kettledrum. Voices callin’, voices cryin’. Some are born and some are dyin’. It’s alpha and omega’s kingdom come, And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree. The virgins are all trimming their wicks, The whirlwind is in the thorn tree. It’s hard for thee to kick against the pricks,
Till Armageddon no shalam, no shalom. Then the father hen will call his chickens home, The wise man will bow down before the throne. And at his feet they’ll cast their golden crowns, When the man comes around.
Whoever is unjust let him be unjust still. Whoever is righteous let him be righteous still. Whoever is filthy let him be filthy still. Listen to the words long written down, When the man comes around.
The virgins are all trimming their wicks, The whirlwind is in the thorn trees. It’s hard for thee to kick against the prick, In measured hundredweight and penny pound, When the man comes around.
"And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts. And I looked, and behold a pale horse, and his name that sat on him was Death, and hell followed with him."
“It has almost become a truism that we live in a choice culture, that who we are is the sum of our choices, and that one of our human rights is freedom of choice. We are even now in the process of making sex, our very gender identity, a matter of choice. What makes Western culture such a Babylon is not its suspicion that there is no divinity shaping our ends but its satisfaction that this is so and its choice that this be so. The idea of a godless universe is not just accepted but chosen and celebrated.”—@LenSweet #IAmAFollower (via thecommoncup)
New ministry starting up with Francis Chan and some others this fall. Training people to reach the unreached people groups around the world. Wanted to put this up for those who would be interested and in a place to be equipped.
“Do you ever even consider the possibility that maybe, the Creator’s sense of justice is actually more developed than yours? And that maybe his love and his mercy are perfect, and that you could be the one that is flawed?”—Francis Chan
