“All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves.”—Blaise Pascal
Make Your Own Application by Michael Newnham - A Book Review
Be it lessons learned from cats, from his son’s skatepark or from other points in life, Michael Newnham has a story inside this book to touch your soul. Much more than just stories though, as the title suggests there are applications to be made from these stories and lessons to be learned. God has a lot to say to us through everyday life, if only we will listen.
This book was like a breath of fresh air and the author was refreshingly honest with his feelings and doubts. Not quite devotional, but many of the tales could be used as such.
I highly recommend this book to you the reader.
Several quotes from “Make Your Own Application”:
"That’s a lot to ask for some people…to believe that someone cares and will freely give them what they need. Sometimes, it’s too much to ask. Make your own application…."
"Put yourself in the story…wherever it says He spoke to the disciples put your own name in there, because He’s speaking to you. Listen to Him…listen to Him rebuke the religious, and let Him confront you all over again with the reality of who your God really is."
"Joy is a choice…a choice to pursue that which brings joy despite living in a snake pit."
“Why would I want another god? Other gods have to be appeased. You’re the only god who only appeased Yourself, in a sacrifice of Yourself, to purchase me for Yourself.”—Matt Chandler (via heguidesmyfeet)
“We are all poor, if only we will see it. We have nothing to offer God except the crushing debt of our sin. But Jesus offers us the riches of his grace: ‘For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich’ (2 Cor. 8:9).”—Philip Graham Ryken
Daisy Love Merrick, daughter of Reality pastor Britt Merrick, was diagnosed today with cancer for the third time is as many years. Please pray for a miracle. We serve a God of miracles. “There’s no saccharine view in the Christian faith. The promise is not that if you love God, good things will happen in your life. The promise is not that if you love God, the bad things really aren’t bad; they’re really good things. The promise is that God will take the bad things, and he’ll work them for good in the totality.”— Tim Keller (via davidrclark)
