Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV)

Some complain of their sad spiritual state. Some make great self-efforts to revive their souls, such as imposing on themselves many religious duties. But if they would only behold the glory of Christ by faith as he is revealed to us in the Scriptures they would soon be healed. If only they would abide in Christ, then they would be fruitful. (John 15:4-5)

If we regularly beheld the glory of Christ our Christian walk with God would become more sweet and pleasant, our spiritual light and strength would grow daily stronger and our lives would more gloriously represent the glory of Christ. Death would be most welcome to us.

When God planned the great work of saving sinners, he provided two gifts. He gave his Son and he gave his Spirit. In fact each person of the Trinity was involved in the great work of salvation. The love, grace and wisdom of the Father planned it; the love, grace and humility of the Son purchased it; and the love, grace and power of the Holy Spirit enabled sinners to believe and receive it.

The first great truth in this work of salvation is that God sent his Son to take our nature on him and to suffer for us in it. The second great truth is that God gave his Spirit to bring sinners to faith in Christ and so be saved.

Nisi Christus Nemo

To have all the clouds and darkness that are raised by sin between us and the throne of God dispelled; to have the fire, and storms, and tempests, that are kindled and stirred up about Him by the law removed; to have His glorious face unveiled, and His holy heart laid open, and a view given of those infinite treasures and stores of goodness, mercy, love, and kindness which have had an unchangeable habitation therein from all eternity; to have a discovery of these eternal springs of forbearance and forgiveness,– is that which none but Christ can accomplish and bring about .

Let our hearts admit, “I am poor and weak. Satan is too subtle, too cunning, too powerful; he watches constantly for advantages over my soul. The world presses in upon me with all sorts of pressures, pleas, and pretenses. My own corruption is violent, tumultuous, enticing, and entangling… Therefore, on God alone will I rely for my keeping. I will continually look to Him.

If we do not abide in prayer, we will abide in temptation. Let this be one aspect of our daily intercession: “God, preserve my soul, and keep my heart and all its ways so that I will not be entangled.” When this is true in our lives, a passing temptation will not overcome us. We will remain free while others lie in bondage.

Books, books, books….

:(

All the books available to bloggers on Booksneeze.com right now are ones I have read. Of course it is a sum total of one, being Outlive Your Life by Max Lucado.

But that isn’t a problem! I am reading Overcoming Sin and Temptation, which is a compilation of 3 three classics by John Owen, the Puritan theologian.

  • Of the Mortification of Sin in Believers
  • Of Temptation the Nature and Power of It
  • Indwelling Sin

I like the advice that C.S. Lewis gives about reading books.

It’s a good rule after reading a new book never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between. If that is too much for you, you should at least read one old one to three new ones…. Every age has its own outlook. It is especially good at seeing certain truths and especially liable to make certain mistakes. We all therefore need the books that will correct the characteristic mistakes of our own period…. None of us can fully escape this blindness, but we shall certainly increase it, and weaken our guard against it, if we read only modern books….The only palliative is to keep the clean sea breeze of the centuries blowing through our minds and this can only be done by reading old books.

I have gotten halfway through the first section and must say it is great reading and good advice on battling sin. It is based on Romans 8:13.

In the words peculiarly designed for the foundation of the ensuing dis- course, there is:

1. A duty prescribed: “Mortify the deeds of the body.”

2. The persons denoted to whom it is prescribed: “You”—“if you

mortify.”

3. A promise annexed to that duty: “You shall live.”

4. The cause or means of the performance of this duty—the Spirit: “If

you through the Spirit.”

5. The conditionality of the whole proposition, wherein duty, means,

and promise are contained: “If you,” etc.
