The Pink Ribbon and the Dollar Sign

Article in Christianity Today by Russell D. Moore

Extract:

We don’t need a Christian foundation to compete with the merchants of death. We don’t need one more coalition with enough signatures to counter the threatened boycotts of the abortion rights peddlers. And we sure don’t need to sell bumper stickers with a line drawn through a pink ribbon.

What we need, first of all, are churches who recognize that this isn’t all that surprising. Mammon is a jealous god, and he’s armed to the teeth. We need to create the kind of counter-culture that constantly shines the light of Christ wherever these false gods exist in our own affections. And then we need to demonstrate what it means to believe that a person’s life consists in more than the abundance of his possessions.

Let’s stop highlighting how God “blesses” the millionaire who tithes. Let’s stop trumpeting the celebrity football players and beauty queens as evidence of God’s blessing. Let’s show that God has blessed us in a Christ who never had a successful career or a balanced bank account, but who was blessed by God with life, and with children that no one can number, from every tribe, tongue, nation, and language.

Planned Parenthood has won this one. They spent a lot of money, and they’ll make a lot of money. And they’ll do so off the shredded corpses of children and the raped consciences of women. If Jesus’ kingdom were of this world, we’d be fundraising to keep up with them.

But what we have is greater than that. We have a word that tells a pregnant young woman that we believe her Down Syndrome baby is a gift, not a health care burden. And we can offer the kind of gospel that cleanses the conscience and offers what outlasts money and power: life and that to the uttermost.

Let’s work to legally protect women and children. And let’s grieve that old Mammon has won the day, again. But let’s not grieve like the pagans who have no hope. When it comes to the struggle for life, the color of victory isn’t pink like a ribbon. It’s red like a cross.

The Thirsty Theologian - Abortion: No Laughing Matter

Extract: (Talking about a Sitcom)

Following the announcement of the pregnancy came two predictable things. First, will she have the baby? Naturally, she has the option of keeping it or killing it. That’s not how the writers put it, of course. “Killing” is not mentioned, nor is the word “abortion” spoken. But the option is presented. Second, just as predictable (for a sitcom, as opposed to a serious drama) is the decision to keep the baby. Unwed mothers on television and in movies are as common as Mormons in Utah, but abortion and comedy still do not mix. Why is that?

The answer, I think, is that even the most morally depraved (television producers?) in our society recognize that abortion is a bad thing. They can talk about abortion in the abstract without emotion, but actually doing it is a somber undertaking. The most skilled writer just can’t think of any good punchlines.

Changes in the law, blocking abortion clinics, demeaning name-calling will not stop abortions. The history of the church through the ages has been the history of changes brought about in society through the church demonstrating and living an alternative vision for life. We need to stop telling our non-believing neighbors how wrong their way of life is, and need to start showing the power of the gospel in the way we live… Let me ask you: Which has greater power? Ten thousand people who fill the streets in front of abortion clinics and shame those seeking abortions, or ten thousand people in California who take to the state capital in a petition they have signed stating they will take any unwanted child of any age, any color, any physical condition so that they can love that child in the name of Jesus Christ?

James says, “You desire and do not have; so you kill” (Jas. 4:2). We kill marriages and we kill unborn babies because they cut across our desires; they stand in the way of our unencumbered self-enhancement. And we live in a culture where self-enhancement and self-advancement is god. And if self-enhancement is god, then the One who is at work in the womb shaping a person in His own image is not God and the assault on His work is not sacrilegious, but obedience to the god of self.
