Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV)

I shivered involuntarily when I realised that the corpse on the sewer floor before me was the very image of my story-telling host’s imaginary Morlocks! Indeed, as I stared at the dead thing, its large eyes still glaring at us, the word imaginary shrank from my thoughts. I stood aghast, bereft of sense as would be an Alpine traveller, who, upon the lifting of a snowstorm, finds himself poised on the very brink of a bottomless precipice

Some quotes from K.W. Jeter’s “Infernal Devices”

Some good quotes from K.W. Jeter’s book Infernal Devices. He invented the term “steampunk”.

A fascination with Victorian tech is at its heart a salutary acceptance of the machine-ness of machines – and correspondingly an acceptance of the humanity of human beings. There’s something nauseatingly predigested about the look of late 20th and early 21st century industrial design, all those Steve Jobs-approved rounded edges like cough lozenges sucked on for a minute or so before being spat out into your hand. Whereas Victorian machines, with their precision-cut gears and spurred mantis armatures, are unabashedly themselves rather than trying to smoothly cozen their way into your life.

One of my favorite Dr. Who quotes

Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright and the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan were the 1st Doctor’s original companions when they departed 76 Totter’s Lane in the TARDIS in 1963. Eventually, Susan stayed on Earth at the end of “The Dalek Invasion of Earth” and Vicki joined them.

In “The Chase” another dalek show. Vicki is standing there screaming and in a jab at most horror shows of the time Ian says:

Ian[to Vicki] Don’t just stand there and scream, you little fool, RUN!

Thou art free to all that is treasured up in Christ—wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. It matters not what thy need is, for there is fulness of supply in Christ, and it is there for thee. O what a “freedom” is thine! freedom from condemnation, freedom to the promises, freedom to the throne of grace, and at last freedom to enter heaven!

I have so many ideas. Some are simple like take down traffic lights and eliminate the post office. The bigger ones will be tougher, like ‘bring all this crumbling to the ground.’

All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves.

For we are mistaken when we look forward to death ; the major portion of death has already passed. Whatever years lie behind us are already in death’s hands.

We are all poor, if only we will see it. We have nothing to offer God except the crushing debt of our sin. But Jesus offers us the riches of his grace: ‘For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich’ (2 Cor. 8:9).

There’s no saccharine view in the Christian faith. The promise is not that if you love God, good things will happen in your life. The promise is not that if you love God, the bad things really aren’t bad; they’re really good things. The promise is that God will take the bad things, and he’ll work them for good in the totality.

O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire, O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, that so I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, “Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.” Then give me grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long. In Jesus name, amen.

Don’t pray for the persecution to stop! We shouldn’t pray for a lighter load but a stronger back to endure. Then the world will see that God is with us, empowering us to live in a way that reflects His love and power
